You have to actually record yourself! I know, Drama Queen party of 1, but actually. Hearing yourself recorded is a terrible experience. It has you pitying everyone in your life who has to hear that on a regular basis. This week I recorded my second webcast ever, and while it is still out of my comfort zone to talk to my computer, I am getting better. If you wanted to be fancy it's called the Zone of Proximal Development, I prefer to call it the learning zone. Being pushed just far enough out of your comfort zone that you are challenged and grow from that challenge, but not pushed out enough that you are too scared to learn. I have learned that the pro's of webcasts greatly out weigh this one con, and just like with everything practice makes perfect. Maybe next week this will be a vlog. Stay tuned!
First let me share with you how much I like the IDEA of using webcasts as an educational resource. As an auditory learner, if I can watch a video about how to do something or about a topic, that video will stick with me much longer than reading the same thing in a article ever will. Secondly, it saves time! As a per-service teacher I have a hard enough time balancing school work, house work, working to pay tuition, and attempting to have a social life. As a teacher I am sure this only gets more challenging. To sit down and write up a monthly newsletter to parents or assignment rational for students can be a long process, getting the right words down and formatting it to make it aesthetically pleasing can quickly become an all night task. However, once you turn on the webcam and talk for a couple minutes, bing bang boom, you throw it on YouTube and your done in ten minutes! These are huge pro's for webcast, however there is one con...

Andrea, I totally agree! Webcasts are so great, but listening to a recording of yourself is the worst! But I really do think that the more you do it, the easier it gets. Its like taking a picture of yourself every day. The first few days you think, "really, that's what my hair really looks like?" but then after a while you get used to your "screen persona." Really though, I feel the same way :)

I couldn't agree with you more Andrea! I must have recorded myself, and I am not joking, 35 times before I could get it right. Even thinking about it now makes me want to change it again. I didn't realize how easy a webcast was until Kurtis showed us how to do it. It's quick and easy! One of the hard things I find doing a webcast is that although I have a script written, I can't keep looking down at it as it takes away form the webcast.

I can definitely relate to the fact that my voice as well sounds terrifying. I think that like anything else, practice makes perfect. The more webcasts we try out the more comfortable we will feel doing them!

I'm loving your blogs Andrea! You're a great writer! Very personable! I totally agree that doing a video as opposed to a paper is so much easier, which is strange since I have a very hard time communicating through speaking and have always been better at writing things down. I'm glad I was pushed out of my comfort zone to try this technique!
